The Ten Virgins

Jesus said,
"Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom."
"And five of them were wise, and five were foolish."
"They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:"
"But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps."
"While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept."
"And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him."
"Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps."
"And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lambs are gone out."
"But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves."
"And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut." (Matt. 25: 1 - 10) (See also Rev. 4: 1.).

"Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us."
"But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not." (Matt. 25: 11 - 12) (Read also Matt. 7: 13 - 14, 21 - 22.).

"Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh." (Matt. 25: 13)

It is true that this is a parable. (A parable is a story told to illustrate a special teaching.). Even though that is true, there is a spiritual truth in those passages concerning a particular event. That event, I believe, is called the Rapture. The word "Rapture" means to be "caught up" (taken up, or caught upward).

The late Dr. Nathan M. Meyer said that the "oil" represents the Holy Spirit. So, five of those virgins have the Holy Spirit, and the other five do not. When the Lord Jesus returns in the Rapture, the five virgins, who do not have the "oil", the Holy Spirit, will be left behind. This is exactly what will happen to those who do not have the Spirit of Christ (Rom. 8: 9), the Holy Spirit, living within them when the Rapture takes place. They will be left behind to endure (go through) the tribulation period (the 70th week of Daniel). The five virgins who have the Holy Spirit living within their hearts will be caught up, in the clouds, in the air, to go with the Lord Jesus to Heaven.

Here is what I believe this parable illustrates or represents. The 5 virgins who were wise represent the believers. They are the Bride of Christ, the Church. The 5 virgins who were foolish represent the lost (unsaved) who did not have the "oil", the Holy Spirit (Matt. 25: 3, 8 - 12). (See also Rom. 8: 1, 9, 11, I Cor. 3: 16, Gal. 3: 26, 4: 6.). Jesus is the bridegroom (Matt. 25: 1, 5 - 6, 10). He is the One who tarries (Matt. 25: 5). He is in Heaven and ready to return. He is the One whom the virgins were to meet (Matt. 25: 6). He is the One who is coming (Matt. 25: 10).
